Charleston, SC Naval Base. The Charleston, SC Naval Base or Naval Weapons Station Charleston, as it is also known, is located in Berkeley County in South Carolina on the west bank of the Cooper River, just north of Charleston. Covering a sprawling 17,000 acres of land, the Charleston, SC Naval Base encompasses more than 16 miles of waterfront, 10,000 acres of forest and wetlands, 38.2 miles of railroad, four deep-water piers, plus more than 292 miles of roads. More than 11,000 military personnel are employed on the base and approximately 3,600 personnel occupy on-base military housing.
Charleston, SC Naval Base History. The Charleston, SC Naval Base has a rich history dating back to its beginnings in 1941 when it was first commissioned as a facility for the collection and distribution of ammunition point during World War II. The country’s ammunition supply was loaded onto ships here, many of which were built at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. After the end of World War II, the Charleston, SC Naval Base became involved in the handling of guided missiles. The base continued to grow and new buildings were built in 1969 for the Standard and Red Eye missiles and construction continued throughout the 1970s until 1981, when the Charleston, SC Naval Base annexed the nearby Charleston Army Depot and the name of the base was changed to Naval Weapons Station.  [Top]

Charleston Naval Training Base. Today, the Charleston, SC Naval Base is an active training center for the United States military for the Nuclear Power Training Unit, Propulsion Facility, Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, the Border Patrol satellite academy, Explosive Ordnance Detachments, Mobile Mine Assembly Unit and the Marine Corps Reserve Center, among others. The Charleston Naval Training Base has more than 1,800 houses on the grounds of the base for Navy and Coast Guard enlisted and their dependents.
